Rick Ross is under fire, and this time for his words, not weapons.
The rapper has sparked controversy among fans and activists for lyrics from the track "U.N.E.N.O.,&q... which appear to glorify date rape. The track appears on Rocko's mixtape, which dropped in February.
"Put Molly all in her champagne/ She ain't even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that/ She ain't even know it," raps Rozay. Molly, of course, is the crystal form of MDMA often used to enhance sexuality and sometimes considered a "date rape" drug.
While many rappers, including Kanye West and 2Chainz, have referenced Molly in their lyrics,
activists say Ross' use is different. &qu... lyric is obviously promoting rape," says journalist and hip hop activist Rosa Clemente. "Not just date rape, but rape and rape culture and violence against women. We live in a society by the time that African - American women and Latina women are 18, almost half of them - 44 percent - have been sexually abused."
More than 350 people have already signed a petition on Change.org calling for the rapper to apologize for
the lyrics.
"If she didn't know she didn't give consent," says Jerry L. Barrow of The Urban Daily. "And if she didn't give consent she was raped. You're out here telling your fans that it's cool to rape women and you don't even know it."
The Maybach Music Group boss has not yet
commented on the outrage.
