Governors of on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) have described the handcuffing of the national publicity secretary
of their party, Olisa Metuh, by the Nigeria Prison Service as a gross
abuse of human liberty.
The governors in a release on Thursday, January 21, in Abuja by Osaro Onaiwu, the coordinator of the forum, accused the President Muhammadu Buhari of using the anti-corruption agencies and other institutions of state to subject accused persons like Metuh to inhuman treatment.
According to Premium Times, the party said the cuffing of Metuh was meant to deride the PDP as well as taint the party as a party of corrupt individuals even when they were yet to be convicted by any competent court.
The forum said: “The cuffing of the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP exemplifies a terrible decay of power by the APC regime which sees itself bigger than the democratic state, Nigeria, which brought it to power.
“The only reasonable conclusion we have reached is that the anti-corruption agencies and other institutions of state have allowed themselves to be dictated to by a single vindictive authority which takes pleasure in using power anyhow and in anyway in gross abuse of the constitution, African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and human liberty.”
The forum however stated that it is not against the anti-corruption war of the present regime of President Muhammadu Buhari, but insisted that the anti-corruption drive must be within the ambit of the constitution and appropriate laws.
In the same vein, the PDP director on new media, Deji Adeyanju has described the arrest of Olisah Metuh, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as an attempt by the APC to silent opposition parties in Nigeria.
Adeyanju stated that the current war against corruption by the President Muhammadu Buhari lead government is only aimed at distracting Nigerians from the real issues.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS) has defended the manner Olisa Metuh was treated when he appeared for his trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja in Handcuffs on Tuesday, January 19.
According to the NPS, putting handcuffs was at the discretion of the prison officer, who supervised Metuh’s court appearance.
The NPS also dismissed allegations by the PDP that the service mistreated Metuh all in a bid to play out a script orchestrated by President Muhammadu Buhari.
